It's late, I'm tired and this is way overdue.
We're Underground Sewers, a group of crafty, creative women living on the far reaches of California's northern coast. We sew (and more) after work, after the kids are in bed and after we finally are able to take a moment for ourselves before we pass out from exhaustion. This blog is meant to chronicle and show off our talents and projects.
I found a great definition for "underground" and had to share it:
noun |ˈəndərˌground| |ˈəndərˈgraʊnd| |ˈʌndəgraʊnd|
• a group or movement seeking to explore alternative forms of lifestyle or artistic expression
I wouldn't say that there's too much that's underground about our lifestyles, but we do enjoy exploring alternative forms of artistic expression. Our first group projects have been quilts. One at a time, each member has bought enough fabric to divvy up between the other members, and requests a certain type of block or strip be made. Then, when all the finished blocks are returned to her, she assembles them into a quilt. So far, here's what has happened:
Kathryn - 12" squares, absolutely any style, mostly pink and brown. Quilt top is currently being pieced together.
Nikki - long horizontal strips, organic curves, water theme. Completed by April 11, 2009.
Lynn - 12" squares, reprinted '30s fabrics, semi-traditional patterns. Currently at a standstill, needs more squares.
Sara - 8" squares, super simple geometry, Heather Ross 'Mendocino' fabrics. Quilt top is currently being pieced together.
Marina - rectangular improv, any size, made with personal stash scraps. Status unknown.
Deirdre - 10" squares, straight or wonky log cabins, Elizabeth House 'Red Letter Day' fabric. Squares just finished and returned to Deirdre.
Deanna - Final group member to start a quilt. No rush, but I think we're all anxious to see what she has in mind!
There will be photos and individual posts relating to each of these projects and group members in the future. Just not now. :)
